Before & After: Parents-to-Be Gave Their Bedroom a Cozy Cottagecore Refresh
A new baby changes everything, including how you use your home. With their first little one on the way, Monika and her husband Ryan decided it was time to turn their bedroom into a more comfortable spot for late nights, early mornings, and family snuggles.
“We wanted to make it cozy yet functional, so that we would be ready to share the room with a baby once he arrives,” Monika says. “It’s a big room, but we couldn’t figure out how to fill it and what textures to use to make it feel homey.”
Monika and Ryan made a big difference without buying any new furniture. They got a few things from Macy’s, like a quilt set and a comforter set, to achieve a homey vibe. Smaller items like textiles and pillows are a quick, easy way to infuse a space with warmth, color, and softness. And at Macy’s, you can choose from high-quality, affordable options across a range of styles. Monika and Ryan went shopping in-store with Apartment Therapy editor-in-chief Charli Penn and discovered plenty of finds to turn their bedroom into a peaceful place for the whole family. The low-lift makeover only took an afternoon!

Layered bedding instantly ups the cozy factor. The romantic block print of this comforter set is inspired by the Italian countryside, for instant cottagecore charm. The deep green quilt set isn’t just for color coordinating: It also adds contrast in weight and texture, for an irresistibly inviting bed. “The comforter makes us want to jump into bed and never leave,” Monika says. “It adds color while also acting as a neutral backdrop for the entire room.”
Speaking of naps, a throw blanket is a must for lounging on top of the covers, whether it’s the baby’s nap time or just a moment for Monika to power down. This cozy sweater knit feels like a warm hug.
“We had not anticipated that throw pillows and a quilt could add so much dimension and warmth to a space. It makes me rethink how I should approach other rooms. A room doesn’t always need repainting or new wallpaper to drastically change it — you can really change the vibe with soft goods.”
Now their bedroom will be a restorative, comfortable space for the whole family. “It’ll make such a difference when we’re up late with the baby, in the middle of the night feeds, and in the late morning — honestly, any time of day will be that much more comfy. I’m deep in my nesting phase, and this was really transformational for us.”
