Like many of us over the past year, Jessica Cumberbatch Anderson has “managed my sanity during quarantine by tackling some home refresh projects that were on my to-do list for months.” As a successful writer, editor, and content strategist, Jessica has been writing about gorgeous interiors (and many other subjects) for over a decade. Her work has been featured in House Beautiful, Town and Country Magazine, Harpers Bazaar, Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, and more. It’s natural, then, that she has a home just as beautiful as the subjects’ spaces she’s covered over the years.

The first spot to received what she calls a “quarantine refresh” was her dining room nook, which she says has become “Zoom famous” after the face lift. She describes boutique hotels as one of her home’s main style inspiration, and that’s evident in the energetically floral metallic wallpaper from Ferm Living that wows throughout the open living area. But you can also see that influence in the home’s extra comfy seating options, blends of graphic patterns, and expertly curated art gallery walls.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Modern, eclectic, glam. I’m typically into rich colors with shots of metallic and lots of mixed patterns, but I’ve been gravitating toward neutrals and monochrome color schemes more so as of late.

Inspiration: Boutique hotels, like the beautifully tiled riads of Marrakech (El Fenn! La Mamounia!) and layered rooms like those at The Whitby designed by Kit Kemp. There’s also hardly ever a space that @dabito touches that I don’t love.

Favorite Element: Our dining nook was one of the first “quarantine refresh” projects I took on and it’s kind of Zoom famous now. I often work there by day and we have dinner there at night.

Biggest Challenge: We don’t get a ton of consistent natural light during the day, which makes my aspirations of being a good plant mom challenging.

I’m not sure anyone ever feels like they have enough space in a NYC home and this year we had to get super creative with carving out space for my husband and I to work from home and for our daughter to do remote learning. It’s helped us not be so rigid about our layout and experiment with how and where we place certain pieces of furniture.

What Friends Say: It’s cozy with little glam moments, and it has great entertaining energy and flow. The kitchen, for instance, is set up in a way that makes guests want to stand and chat as I prep dinner or snacks.

Biggest Embarrassment: Our home has zero curb appeal. I do like the element of surprise you get once you go beyond the gated front door and ugly green hallway, but it would be nice if we had a little more synergy between interior and exterior.

Proudest DIY: I used to fancy myself a DIY queen before we had our daughter, and I did repaint our dining table, switching up the turquoise we had for years to a charcoal black. But these days, DIF (do it fast), or DIW (do it well) have replaced DIY and are really the only kind of projects I can commit to, and they usually require calling in help of some kind.

Biggest Indulgence: We splurged on heated floors during our bathroom reno and I don’t think I’m going back to regular tiled floors ever again.

Best Advice: Curate. Being forced to sit with ALL of our stuff this year forced some decisions about what we love and what we were okay with letting go of, and in the end, I realized that even a somewhat maximalist, layered aesthetic can benefit from some editing. I even had an objective POV, my friend PJ Mehaffey, come in and give the space a once-over after I felt like I’d purged enough. He helped me give new life to a few lingering items that I was on the fence about and get rid of all the “might need some day” stuff.

Dream Sources: In a dream world (or perhaps for my dream home) I’d commission a mural by Alex Proba, a quilt by Bisa Butler, and a handmade lampshade (or two) from Beauvamp.
