“Olivia lives in New York City with her boyfriend and dog in an overpriced apartment that she decorates with semi-expensive things people leave by the trash can with ‘please take’ signs, and enjoys lighting no less than 30 candles at a time,” reads a passage from Beauty and Fashion editor Olivia Muenter’s website “About” page. At the time of this house tour’s photo shoot there weren’t 30 candles flickering, but there was a simple, sweet style with free finds mixed in.
You know what else this home has? A private deck… in New York! Olivia recognizes how rare it is to have access to this kind of outdoor space in the city, and she has outfitted it with comfy lounge furniture; it’s cozy enough to act as an extension of her living space.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Eclectic. I like a little bit of everything when it comes to interiors.
Inspiration: Everything. I love going to flea markets and antique shops and choosing small elements to work into a room that’s more modern, or vice versa. Creating a balance of all the different elements—and incorporating color into everything—really makes me happy.
Favorite Element: I love all of our plants. I think they add so much warmth and color to the space.
Biggest Challenge: Finding pieces for the space that are affordable, double as storage, and aren’t going to fall apart in a year or two.
What Friends Say: Most people are always surprised how much smaller it is in in real life. The second most common comment we get is about the outdoor space. It’s rare to have a private deck in New York, so I think that aspect of it surprises people, too.
Biggest Embarrassment: I’m a beauty editor, so I have so many beauty products that they always end up on our kitchen table and on top of our dresser. I always wish I was more minimalist and organized, but at this point I just have accepted that I’m a bit of a product hoarder.
Proudest DIY: This isn’t so much a DIY as a tip, but I get questions about the round mirror in my living room constantly. I actually found it because someone in my old apartment complex left it in the hallway with a “for free” sign. It has a few blemishes, but it makes me love it so much more.
Biggest Indulgence: We had a very cheap, very uncomfortable couch for a while so finally getting a nice couch and ottoman was a dream. I am extremely indecisive, so getting a green velvet couch gave me so much anxiety… ultimately, though, I am SO happy with what it does for the space (and how comfortable it is).
Best Advice: I am a little bit of a perfectionist, so I always have the impulse to make a space as perfect as possible as quickly as possible. Sometimes, this results in me buying things that aren’t actually right for the space or spending too much money too quickly. I always try to remind myself that creating the perfect space can be gradual—and that nothing is perfect, anyway.
Dream Sources: I am obsessed with the Domino Instagram account for interiors inspiration, and people like @_lisa_dawson_ who posts such gorgeous design inspiration.
