Charleston blogger and shop owner Liz Martin has a simple mission: to make every day feel like the weekend. And according to Liz, it starts at home. “It’s about being surrounded by little things that make you smile,” she says. “[things like] fresh flowers, glorious candles, and fun decor.” Nothing says weekend like a getaway, and Liz incorporated elements from all of her favorite vacation destinations into her design.

From Palm Springs to Palm Beach, Liz incorporated homages from her travels into her playful, bright, and cheery style. In her living room, sail boats, primary colors, and a swing chair emulate the fun style of the Summercamp Hotel in Martha’s Vineyard. In the guest room, a peach-covered duvet puts Georgia on your mind, and a cactus in the kitchen is an ode to California.

Liz and her husband Jonathan decided to trade in their 100-year-old home for a bright and open new build walking distance from their favorite local park, which Liz says she visits with their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Maddie nearly every day.

“We just moved in this summer, but I already love the energy in our house!” Liz says.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: My style is fun and colorful.

Inspiration: My goal was to make it remind me of my travels. I always feel those post vacation blues soooo much, so I have tried to incorporate elements of my favorite sunny places like Florida and California throughout the house to make it feel more like I’m still on vacation when I get home. My business mantra at Charleston Weekender is to try to “make every day feel like the weekend,” and I think that has to start at home! It’s all about being surrounded by little things that make you smile—fresh flowers, glorious candles, and fun decor.

Favorite Element: I love my happy little swing chair corner. It’s so soothing to rock or swing, and I never get tired of looking at my birdie wallpaper. It’s a space that really just helps me escape.

Biggest Challenge: Making final decisions! An interior designer helped me with our living room. I knew I wanted it to remind me of New England (specifically the playful vibes of the Summercamp Hotel in Martha’s Vineyard), but I struggled with choosing a couch color, determining the layout, etc. Mary Eliza Linton of Mary Eliza Interiors created a great layout for us and helped me source those finishing touches to pull it all together.

Proudest DIY: I am really not a DIY gal—my first project is often my last! Case in point, floral pillows on the navy couch. They were one of my first (and last!) attempts at sewing. I found square dinner napkins so I literally just had to sew all the sides together and didn’t even have to cut anything.

Biggest Indulgence: It feels pretty extravagant to have two couches in one house! However, when we’re decompressing from work or at home on the weekend, that’s probably where we spend the majority of our time. Besides, I have always hated having guest bedrooms or an office room that never gets used! By having a lounge/TV room in addition to a living room, we are really utilizing all of the spaces in our home instead of just saving them for when guests come.
