Here’s How To DIY Those Trendy Twist Candles

Spiral taper candles have slowly but surely been creeping up the popularity scale and making their presence known on home decor social media accounts. Because of their unique shape, retailers feel as though they can get away with charging big bucks for a single taper or a set of two. But if you already have standard taper candles hanging around your house, you don’t need to dole out any extra cash.

Home decor and lifestyle Instagrammer Johanne Kohlmetz posted a video to her Instagram Reels showing how she makes her own spiral taper candles using nothing but hot water.

Karoline Dall translated Kohlmetz’s tutorial to English and tried it out herself with great success. 

First, boil water and place your standard taper candles into the pot. Let them sit for about 15 minutes, then remove them and dry. Be careful that you don’t burn yourself during these next steps.

Flatten the softened candles in the areas you’d like them to spiral, and then twist the top in one direction and the bottom in the opposite direction. And that’s literally all there is to it.

If the candles are too hot when you remove them from the water, you can allow them to cool for a bit longer, or use a rolling pin to flatten them out. Make sure to not flatten them too much, or they may become too brittle once dried.
