Your mattress is one of the most important purchases you’ll make for your home. Not only does it need to be high-quality enough to stand up to constant use, but it also has to be designed to deliver exceptional sleep. You know, that thing that plays a central role in our physical, emotional, and mental health.

That’s no small mission, but Avocado Green Mattress is committed to succeeding at it — all while helping the planet. With its signature organic Green Mattress, plus luxurious bedding and quality wood furniture, Avocado is out to become the world’s most sustainable brand. Read on to learn what that means for you (and your zzz’s).

What is Avocado?

Avocado was founded in 2016 with the goal of creating a luxurious and affordable organic mattress that could actually back up buzzwords like “green” and “all-natural.” Designed in Hoboken, NJ, and handmade in California, Avocado mattresses are made with certified organic materials. The company also makes sustainable pillows, bedding, and wood furniture. All of their products are made using environmentally conscious, ethical, and sustainable business practices.

What makes Avocado Green Mattresses different?

There’s a reason that the Avocado Green Mattress has been the highest-rated mattress on Consumer Reports® across every category and price point since 2018. The mattress is available in firm, medium, and plush to suit every type of sleeper. All models use Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)–certified organic wool and cotton, for a cooler sleep than memory foam. (There’s also a vegan option without wool.) The patent-pending innerspring design features individually encased steel coils arranged in seven distinct zones, for superior support and weight distribution.

What makes the Avocado Green Mattress so green?

Avocado holds itself to high sustainability standards, earning some of the world’s strictest environmental certifications. The mattress’s organic wool and cotton are GOTS-certified, which ensures organic farming practices, limits on non-organic substances, ethical business practices, and fair treatment of workers. The Avocado Green Mattress Standard and Pillow-Top models are made with Global Organic Latex Standard–certified organic Dunlop latex, and the Plush Box-Top model adds Forest Stewardship Council®-certified Pure Talalay® latex. Avocado mattresses also feature needle-tufted rosettes, the result of hand-pulling organic cotton ribbons throughout the mattress. This time-honored technique eliminates the need for chemical adhesive between layers.

Just as important, though, is what’s not in the Avocado Green Mattress: Every finished Avocado mattress is Greenguard Gold Certified for low emissions and Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verified. And Avocado is the first American innerspring mattress to be OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified for the entire mattress. That means that every component has been lab-tested for harmful levels of toxic substances.

What else does Avocado do for the environment?

Avocado is a “Best for the World” Certified B Corporation, with the highest Impact Score in the mattress and bedding industry. The company donates 1 percent of all mattress revenues to environmental nonprofits via 1% for the Planet and has been Climate Neutral Certified since 2019.

What other products does Avocado offer?

The Avocado Green Pillow is just as exceptional as the Green Mattress — it even landed on our Apartment Therapy 2020 Best List! The Green Pillow comes in a traditional rectangular shape or an ergonomic curved design, ideal for side sleepers. Extra fill is included so that you can adjust the firmness to your liking, and both options feature a breathable blend of organic kapok fiber and shredded organic latex encased in an organic cotton cover. The Green Pillow is as stringently certified as the Green Mattress.

Avocado also offers organic bedding and responsibly manufactured wood furniture, including a beautiful zero-waste collection made with upcycled wood.
