Beige sofa with pink cushions, wooden beams, shag rug, side table, and potted plants in a bright living room.

There’s really nothing dreamier than antique beams running along the ceiling of an old home. Not only do the natural wood tones warm up a space, but weathered beams give a room so much charm. If you have been dreaming of beams for years but are stuck in a more modern space without them, one TikToker showed how you can create faux beams that look so convincing, you’ll forget how your house looked without them.

Melissa Woods (@welcome2thewoods) posted a video to her TikTok account showing the renovation process of her outdated midcentury-era living room. After removing the wall-to-wall carpeting and de-popcorning the ceilings, Woods decided to draw attention to the slanted roof by adding large faux wood beams.

To create these beams, Woods beveled the edges of her pieces of lumber, each measuring about 14 feet long. She then used packing tape to line up three pieces of lumber and make gluing together the beveled edges easier for just one person.

Next came the distressing. Using a planer, a jigsaw, a wire brush, and some heavy chain, Woods took out any of her frustrations on the beams before staining.

And to install, Woods used a laser level to mark out her mounting blocks, which she screwed right into the ceiling. She was then able to screw the beams right into the support blocks.

So if you’ve been dreaming of antique beams, you can get the look without having to move house. Just take some measurements, head to the lumber store, and get ready to do some distressing. That old world charm is just a few DIY days away.
