You’ve taken the quizzes and surveys to find out which Hogwarts house you would be sorted into by the Sorting Hat, but what about your home state? USDISH wanted to find out which houses all 50 states would be sorted into to celebrate Harry Potter’s birthday (July 31 — he would have turned 42 this year), and the results are pretty surprising.

Using a combination of Google Trends and a survey of 1,000 Wizarding World quiz takers, USDISH concluded that the majority of states (55 percent) would actually be sorted into Slytherin.

However, those surveyed believed that 24 percent of states should belong in Gryffindor. America is the home of the free and the brave, after all. But sadly, only three states (Utah, Michigan, and Connecticut) were sorted as true Gryffindors.

Slytherin by far was the most-searched Hogwarts house in 27 states, making it the most popular house for states to be sorted into, but that’s absolutely nothing to be ashamed of (despite its ties to the Dark Arts). Remember, Slytherin’s traits are ambition, resourcefulness, determination, and cleverness, which are all definitely positive attributes one should raise a butterbeer for.

And, um, sadly no one surveyed believed their states belonged in Hufflepuff. However, those who live in the five states (Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Vermont, and Wyoming) sorted into Hufflepuff agree that their state was rightly sorted.

You can check out the full report over on USDISH’s website to learn more about how your state got sorted into its Hogwarts house.
