Alex and Laure-Anne are designers living and working in Montreal’s trendy and historic Plateau neighborhood. Originally from France, the pair made a move to Montreal last April to pursue new creative opportunities; they arrived in the city with nothing but suitcases of clothing. With a lot of patience, they began to build their new home from scratch. With an interest in vintage pieces from older eras, the couple began searching on weekends at local auctions and online for unique items to fill their new home with.

Alex is an art director with an knack for building things, some of which are found in the loft. Laure-Anne is a graphic designer and some of her art has made it to the walls of their home, as well. Rather than magazines or online blogs, much of their design and decor inspiration comes from places they’ve visited, like tropical countries such as Cuba and Mexico to places around France and Europe. Their main design goal was to have the place truly feel like it is a reflection of themselves and their tastes. Mission accomplished.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Bohemian with a slight edge of graphic design and a touch of kitsch.

Inspiration: Joshua Tree National Park, different eras and tropical southern lands.

Favorite Element: The suspended chair in our bedroom from Cuba and all the wicker furniture.

Biggest Challenge: Moved in with no furniture, so we started from scratch refusing to buy anything new from a store!

What Friends Say: OMG, did you do this all yourselves?!

Biggest Embarrassment: When people ask if it’s only the two of us living in this big place.

Proudest DIY: Integrating our different creations and all of our plant babies that have grown up big and beautiful today.

Biggest Indulgence: Alex’s homemade furniture.

Best Advice: Be patient, really patient and precise about what you bring into your home.

Dream Sources: A Mediterranean house in Pantalegria and a tiny island between Sicilia and Tunisia.
