Warm whites have a splash of yellow, red, or peach mixed in. “They feel cozy, inviting, and soft, wrapping a room in a gentle, creamy glow,” Kayla says. As for cool whites, they carry subtle hints of blue, green, or gray. “They look crisp, modern, and tailored, bringing a fresh, breezy, or architectural edge to a space.” And true or pure whites have little to no underlying pigment. They’re clean, crisp, and high-contrast, functioning just like a blank gallery wall.

“The single most important rule is to never judge a paint swatch on its own,” Kayla says. White paint can carry yellow, blue, gray, green, pink, or even purple undertones — but when you look at a single white paint chip, all you think you’re seeing is white. “Your eyes get tricked, because they have nothing else to compare it to.”

To show the true color, you need a benchmark. Kayla recommends laying your paint swatches flat against a sheet of ordinary white printer paper. “Next to that pure, bright white paper, the hidden colors leap out instantly.”

In contrast, south-facing rooms get an abundance of warm, golden sunlight, which can make warm whites look too yellow. So choose a pure white to keep the space feeling bright and balanced.
