Cleaning windows seems easy on the surface. You spray, you wipe, you enjoy your fresh glass. But then you move to the side, and there they are: streaks. Getting a streak-free shine is one of the more difficult aspects of cleaning your windows. You don’t often notice them until the light shines a certain way — and of course, it’s usually after you’ve already put all your cleaning tools away. But don’t worry: Window cleaning experts gave us some tips on cleaning windows without streaks.

Use Dawn dish soap.

Shari Cedar, CEO of cleaning company AK Building Services, says that Dawn dish soap is the absolute best at streak-free finishes. She suggests mixing a batch of 26 ounces of water and 12 drops of dish soap and putting it into a spray bottle. Spray the window and use a squeegee to remove the solution. Then use a microfiber cloth to remove any remaining liquid.

Wipe your windows with newspaper.

If you don’t have a squeegee or a microfiber cloth, Delah Gomasi, managing director of MaidForYou, says that using newspaper works just as well. Newspaper is absorbent, so if you wipe down your windows with it, it’ll suck up all the moisture to leave you streak-free.

Don’t clean windows at the brightest time of the day.

When the sun is shining super hot on your windows, you will almost certainly get streaks, Gomasi says. That’s because the heat will cause the cleaning solution to dry prematurely. You won’t be able to wipe it all up, which will leave a soapy residue (aka streaks) on your windows.

It’s that easy! With these three tips in mind, you’ll be best able to clean your windows without any pesky streaks sticking around.
