Unlike most of my friends and family, I’m not someone who needs blackout curtains in the bedroom. During the brief period that I had them, it made the space feel cold and unwelcoming; which is exactly how I didn’t want to feel in a room that’s supposed to be my sanctuary. Perhaps I simply chose the wrong blackout curtains, but it was enough for me to know that it wasn’t the route I wanted to take. Shopping for drapes was a little daunting with so many options available, but it helped me narrow down what type of curtains I wanted. Room darkening curtains provide a semi-blackout effect without zapping all of the light from your room,  and I had the benefit of trying out VCNY Home’s Indigo Ink Adalet Ogee Damask Blackout Curtains, which won Best Darkening Curtains on AT’s Best List. They added just the right amount of drama while also preserving the warmth of my bedroom, making it stay nice and cozy throughout the day.

If you want curtains that effectively filter light, but aren’t as heavy as blackout curtains can be, look into room darkening panels like the Indigo Ink Adalet Ogee Tassel Curtains. They provide more than enough blockage to bring the outside light down to a level that’s comfortable for quality R&R. What I love most about them is how decorative they are. Typically, while shopping around for blackout curtains, I came across a lot of plain and solid drapes. It was as if the only feature they had to offer was that they were blackout curtains and not much else. It’s not a problem if that’s what you’re looking for, but I was interested in a product that not only did the thing, but also looked chic while doing it. Available in Spice (orange) and Blue, these luxe curtains are boho-inspired with ogee and damask prints from top to bottom along with tassels going down both sides. The one downside is that the panels have to be purchased separately, so if you happen to order them, be sure to add two to your cart. It’s also recommended that you hang them a little higher if you don’t have tie-backs and don’t want them to pool on the floor. These curtains are fairly long and come in both 52” x 84” and 52” x 95” sizes.

In action, these 100-percent polyester room darkening curtains do exactly what I need them to do, and they do it well. The bright street lamp that’s outside of my window is no longer a disturbance to my sleep, and if I feel like staying in bed all day, I can shut out the world without completely snuffing out the light. I enjoy some darkness, but I don’t want to lose track of time without sunlight altogether. I love how these curtains drape after being hung, and they’re lightweight and laid-back while still having a touch of bohemian flair. Plus, thanks to their rod pocket headings, they’re nearly effortless to mount on the wall. They’re even machine-washable for convenient cleaning.

These curtains are a great fit for a room with a lot of vibrance, but can just as easily bring a splash of color and personality to a neutral space. For someone like me, whose curtain tastes fall in the gray area between total blackout and very sheer, they’re a fantastic mid-point option that doesn’t skip out on style or function.
