Take a Peek Inside Jane Austen’s Former Home in Bath, England

If you’re having a hard time writing your novel, there are many ways to get those creative juices flowing. You could, for instance, attend a class, go for a walk, or sleep on it. If all else fails, there’s always turning a famous author’s home into your very own private writer’s cabin.

Jane Austen’s former family home is one such house you can rent on Airbnb. The property, where Austen resided in from 1801 to 1805, is located in the city of Bath in England, and is where she started writing her abandoned novel, “The Watsons.” The modern space formerly served as the”Austen family’s kitchen, scullery, and vaults—the very place where Jane would have made tea and breakfast for her family, while looking out of the window onto the courtyard,” the host writes.

The charming home features two bedrooms tastefully decorated with both modern art and antique furnishings. It also has a newly-refitted luxury bathroom, a dining area, a full kitchen complete with a wine cooler and espresso machine, a living room, and a study (presumably where Austen got her writing done).

Although the structure dates back to the 17th century, it carefully marries old and new, having modern amenities such as air-conditioning, WiFi, and Netflix, while retaining its old-world charm. The listing reads: “Walls teem with artwork and shelved overflow with curious objects. Rustic stone floors lead to a courtyard that seems far removed from the modern world.”

Maxwell, the property’s host, adds that it’s been “furnished with antique furniture, some of which has been in our family for generations, we offer a unique and authentic slice of history.”

Don’t forget to take in the sights and sounds of Bath, which served as the inspiration for two of Austen’s novels, “Northanger Abbey” and “Persuasion.” The house sits in a central but quiet location, so it’s easy to walk to a restaurant or pub, as well as visit the Holburne Museum and Sydney Gardens.
