Size: 2,500 square feet

When house hunting five years ago, Jodi and Tim had no intention of purchasing a fixer upper. But there was something about this house when they went by to view it that magically felt like home. It must have been destiny, because fixing up the house has created a job and so many opportunities for their family to share not only how to make a home you love, but how to really love the ones that are in your home.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Lighthearted femininboho

Inspiration: Nature, history, and emotion

Favorite Element: By far it’s the light that brightens every corner of the house. We have floor-to-ceiling windows in the main level of the house and the gorgeous light streaming in plays off all the lighthearted colors and textures, boosting my mood.

Biggest Challenge: All of the brown wood moulding that was here when we moved in. I’ve had to paint over every door, every window pane, every baseboard—multiple times—and it still gets scuffed and the brown shows through.

What Friends Say: That it’s always changing, HA! It’s always fun when someone comes over for the first time. My designs are pretty atypical and I love seeing the joy that the playful interior can invoke in people.

Biggest Embarrassment: We have two bathrooms upstairs that are completely original to the house and they are truly terrible. Old stained tile, dark wood, grimy appliances beyond recovery. Whenever we have a house guest spend the night, I find myself apologizing profusely about the state of the bathroom they are assigned to use. After they leave I swear I will update them before the next house guest arrives, but… it’s been five years.

Proudest DIY: Redoing our bonus room. We cut inexpensive plywood boards into strips and then installed them as the flooring in a diagonal angle and then painted them white! The whole room feels so light and bright and such a fun place to hang out!

Biggest Indulgence: We try to do almost everything on a strict budget, but my biggest indulgence has to be the designer appliances by Cafe Appliances, with a white matte finish and bronze hardware.

Best Advice: If you are feeling overwhelmed by the thought of redoing an entire house, break it down into very small projects and focus on one thing at a time. I remember being in the middle of the kitchen remodel. In the meantime, we were having a wall removed in the living room and our staircase had no railing. I was absolutely paralyzed with overwhelm, and couldn’t find the fortitude to keep moving the house forward. During that time I focused on small projects like planting flowers around the mailbox and updating the paint on the post. Doing these little things helped me keep one foot in front of the other, and also gave me the sense of accomplishment that I couldn’t find being in the middle of a larger project like the kitchen.

Dream Sources: Vintage always and forever. Facebook Marketplace and I are BFFs. Shopping small and local and purchasing from friends who are Makers gives me so much joy and my home a story. Outside of that you can find me shopping online at Urban Outfitters for inexpensive but cool furniture, Anthropologie for dishware and candles, IKEA for the basics, and cb2 for all of it.
