Level up your next chill day at home with our guide to having your best low-key home sesh ever.

When was the last time you stayed home and played? If your answer was “middle school,” then hear us out: Canceling your plans in favor of some low-key indoor activities is kind of the greatest and you should try it immediately. It’s just one of the ways that we at Apartment Therapy are honoring National Lazy Day: August 10 on the calendar; every day in our hearts. A lazy day is a moment to appreciate all the reasons that staying in is way more fun than going out.

As makers of some of the comfiest, coziest furniture out there, La-Z-Boy® gets that doing nothing is way more than it seems. It’s about resting, recharging, and slowing down to enjoy the peaceful pleasures of an empty afternoon. Sounds pretty great if you ask us.

“Being lazy makes me feel rejuvenated! It helps me get my creative juices flowing again, especially after a busy week.”

Megan Detloff

For Apartment Therapy Home Projects Director Megan Detloff, it’s a time to reconnect with some of her favorite creative activities. “When I’m feeling lazy but also a little creative, I’ll borrow an audiobook from the library, pop in earbuds, and listen while I sit on the couch and work on knitting, embroidery, watercolors, or sometimes just doodles,” she says. What time should we be there?

The (literal) foundation of a crafty day at home is a couch that doesn’t quit on you, and the La-Z-Boy® Petra Extra Long Sofa is up to the challenge. It has a lovely contemporary silhouette and stylish tapered legs, plus comes in an array of color options. But it’s about more than just looks: The sofa also has extra-deep seats and broad cushions for peak relaxation potential.

“When it comes to sofas, the two most important factors for my husband and I are: Will this couch fit both our bodies plus two medium dogs? And: Will this color be forgiving if one of those dogs runs inside with muddy paws?” Megan says. “This sofa checks yes for both.”

“I love having a lazy day because it gives me time to de-stress and to do things that make me happy without any time crunch or pressure.”

With her headphones on and her audiobook downloaded, Megan lays out her projects. Depending on her mood, that might include watercolors, a coloring book, a knitting project, or an embroidery kit. “I’m new to embroidery, so I like having a kit that includes literally everything you need to complete the project,” she says. No added stress on a lazy day.

And creativity requires sustenance! To cap off this afternoon of art-inspired leisure, a mug of fresh coffee and a tray of her favorite snacks should always be within reach — though honestly, we think that’s true every day.
