Before & After: A Main Bedroom Is Completely Unrecognizable After a Gorgeous Makeover

Cali Gabrielle’s ENTIRE house in New Orleans was transformed thanks to a huge renovation she undertook (with the help of her then-boyfriend). A double shotgun house was turned into a single, but most impressively the house’s architectural bones were dug out from under decades of bad design decisions like ’70s-style wood paneling and shag carpeting. However, one of the most impressive room remodels in the house is the (now) airy and bright main bedroom suite.
Beyond just aesthetics, Cali modernized the house’s cramped original floor plan layout in the renovation, which originally included a series of small rooms leading from one to the next. She did so by knocking down walls and switching the locations of rooms.
It was a last-minute renovation decision in the house’s new main bedroom that really created a wow moment in the home, though: They exposed the joists and vaulted the ceiling in the back of the house, creating a sun-drenched, dreamy oasis of a main bedroom suite.
“All the architectural charm we uncovered under the wood paneling and dropped ceilings during the renovation—especially the chimneys and the original wide plank wood floors that were hiding under parquet, linoleum flooring, and shag carpeting,” says Cali of her favorite elements about the house’s makeover.
“The exposed ceiling joists in the master are also at the top of the list. Leaving the beams exposed and vaulting the ceiling above was a spur of the moment decision made during renovations.”
