You’ve made it! You’ve decided to live together, merging your two households into one. But figuring out how all your stuff can live together, from your grandmother’s nesting tables to his battered but beloved recliner, well, that can be a tiny bit more challenging. Developing a unified and mutually agreed upon aesthetic that showcases both of your personalities and makes your space feel like home may take some work. Never fear: Value City Furniture wants to help. Enter for your chance to win $2,000 of chic furniture, and follow these 4 steps to keep you stylish and sane in your new shared digs:

Step 1: Make a floor plan

Get a feel for what you’re working with by sketching out a floor plan of the new space with each room drawn to scale. Measure the walls of the rooms and write them alongside the corresponding wall in the sketch. Make sure to include all windows, doors and cabinets that might affect your arrangement.

Step 2: Decide where to place your larger furniture

Keep the movers happy and avoid racking up extra moving fees by choosing a spot for larger pieces before you move. Measure carefully to get the right fit. Create a swatch library for your couches, chairs and upholstered items by cutting a small piece of fabric from underneath each piece. Lastly, always think of each piece of furniture individually, keeping in mind how and when it will be put to use.

Step 3: Find a style that merges your tastes

Keep in mind the things that are special to you individually, and figure out the prime spaces in your new home that make sense to merge those pieces together. Even if you don’t love everything your partner has to contribute, you will love the rest! And mixing in more than one style will make your home more layered and interesting. If possible, carve out a small space for each person to call all their own. Want to start a fresh, clean slate? Consider getting new furniture together that you both love. Making a big decor decision together, like buying furniture, will make it easier for both of you to call it home.
