Our Dorm Therapy Student Editor Added an Easy Color Moment to Her “Too-Neutral” Workspace
A style refresh doesn’t have to be big to have big personality — or big impact! In fact, micro-makeovers are some of our favorite ways to make a bold statement. They don’t cost a lot of time, money, or effort, yet the results are inspiring enough to give your space a chic breath of fresh air.
They’re also ideal when you can’t make big changes, such as a rental with strict rules or a dorm room. And even though Dorm Therapy student editor Nyjah Harris has given her dorm some personal touches, its neutral color palette and institutional feel weren’t exactly lighting up her passion for home decor. But by focusing on one easy-to-accessorize spot — the vanity where she gets ready every morning — Nyjah could bring in the electric color trend she loves. And to turn her new style into a multi-sensory experience, she also included Glade® PlugIns® MaxControl™ in Hawaiian Breeze®. The bright combo of ripe pineapple, hibiscus, and peach nectar will make her vanity area smell as energizing as it looks.
Crank Up the Color
The electric color trend isn’t about being quiet! Nyjah took every opportunity to lean into her love of bold hues: She set the scene with a bright teal chair and playful terrazzo desktop vinyl, then added accents (and more accents) to amp up the effect. From fluorescent coffee mugs and quirky pastel vases to neon pink scissors, Nyjah didn’t miss a single colorful detail. And when you’re using the whole rainbow, there’s no such thing as clashing.
Get Inspired by Nature
Bringing the outside in is a great way to re-energize any space, starting with an invigorating fresh fragrance. Glade® PlugIns® MaxControl™ in Hawaiian Breeze® is as bold and vibrant as a splash of hot pink, adding a tropical air of personality to the room. Plus, Nyjah can use the MaxControl dial to customize the right amount of fragrance for the size of her room. Potted greenery continues the earthy effect, including a hanging planter that makes great use of vertical space.
Play with Light
Placing the vanity by her window isn’t just a practical choice. It also maximizes the natural light’s effect on her colorful desktop trinkets. Her funky iridescent lamp sparkles beautifully in the sunlight, and the reflection off the desktop helps everything appear brighter. A colorful curtain tie-back helps let light in, and a tiered clear acrylic shelf adds storage without blocking the view.
