Use This Weekend to Set Up a Work Station for All Your Outdoor Projects
If your garden to-do list is overgrown, you’re not alone — but you needn’t worry. There’s an easy way to get yourself ready to tackle all your yard projects without spending too much time or money. A gardening station will organize your outdoor storage, contain muddy messes, and save your back and knees from squatting and kneeling. And it’s affordable to stock up on all the supplies you’ll need for it when you know exactly which Walmart basics to buy. Here’s how to do it.
1. Begin with Bins
A good potting bench has multiple shelves, so you can find a place for everything. (We used Belham Living’s Cottonwood Potting Bench, which also comes with handy hooks.) To keep things neat and tidy, arrange the big stuff in bins and trays. A simple set of wooden crates works well for wrangling hoses, potting soil, and compost, while a galvanized metal tray neatly stows muddy boots. For smaller packaged items, like plant food and fertilizer, use modern metal baskets.
2. Sort & Store Your Tools
The simplest way to organize your tools is to keep like with like. Store watering cans and misters on the same shelf. Hang trowels and hand tools from hooks or corral them in a garden tote, so they’re easy to find. Keep larger shovels and rakes together, and don’t forget to keep a sunhat and gardening gloves on hand — plus some sunscreen for summer afternoons outdoors.
3. Pick Your Planters
Now for the fun stuff! As an avid gardener, you can never have too many planters. Buy small ones in sets to use for seed starters. Choose pairs to flank a doorway or decorate a table. For larger modern arrangements, pick a mix of materials — from galvanized metal to concrete. Sizes and shapes can range from high standing planters to low bowls. Container gardening offers endless possibilities, and there’s no better way to spend a weekend.
