This Is The Bed I Wish I Had Bought Many Years Ago

When I lived in a walk-up in Greenwich Village, the building staircase was so narrow that even a neighbor carrying groceries home could completely block traffic. Obviously, this made moving in a challenge. My roommate went so far as hiring someone to cut his bed in half, move it up the tiny staircase, and reassemble it upstairs. I elected to sleep on an air mattress. Needless to say, we both could have used The Bed, by Thuma.

As its name implies, The Bed is not a regular bed. It’s The Bed for anyone who wants something luxurious yet also very portable. It’s a stylish, sturdy platform bed that can be assembled in minutes thanks to a unique design that utilizes Japanese joinery. It really is like an elegant, very easy-to-solve jigsaw puzzle that is all secured by just two hand-tightened screws. Plus, that joinery becomes a cool design feature when it’s assembled. See how effortlessly it all comes together here:

Even if you’re not yet in your forever home, Thuma designed The Bed to be your forever bed by sourcing high-quality upcycled wood to craft it (no cheap fiberboard or peeling veneers here, folks). A walnut finish brings out the natural wood grain, and rounded corners save your shins from any late-night stumbles. The leg bottoms are padded with cork for floor protection while the double-strength slats are cushioned for extra comfort. An included padded minimalist headboard-alternative, aptly named The PillowBoard, (choose from Dark Charcoal or Light Linen) completes the look, while also providing comfortable support for leaning back or sitting up in bed.

You’ll also be happy to know that this bed can be a storage upgrade. With 9” of clearance, it’s taller than most platform beds, giving you some extra space to get organized. Does that all spark joy? I think so.
