I Hate Most Rugs, But This Lesser-Known Home Brand Has the (Affordable!) Style of My Dreams
Confession: Up until a few weeks ago, I’d never bought a rug in my entire life (yep, really). I do own a small runner in my kitchen but, despite being a home editor, I personally hate rug shopping for my own space. I’m awful at determining the right dimensions for each room, and honestly get super torn between the many, many styles and textures out there. Not to mention, they’re expensive, and tough to look for (and then most likely return) online.
I’d basically been resolved to the bland bare-floor lifestyle, until I had a rug breakthrough during a recent team brainstorm. A coworker was sharing a new find from Quince, a direct-to-consumer retailer that specializes in high-quality, lower-cost apparel and home goods. Since I wasn’t familiar with the brand, I did some digging on the site and landed on their rug page. Much to my surprise, I actually found one that I loved for both its style and price.
Quince’s Zigzag Flatweave Wool Rug caught my eye thanks to the simple pattern and pretty muted color contrast — I’m a sucker for anything light pink. It felt equal parts fun and timeless overall, so I knew I’d get years-long bang for my buck and it won’t go out of style. Speaking of, the under-$300 cost for a 5′ x 8′ arguably lured me in the most. Quince even shows the comparable pricing value from standard big-box retailers which, in this case, would be $562. Basically, I’d save 47 percent. One I got approval from one of my most interior-savvy friends, I immediately bought this.
Because it’s made-to-order, handwoven by artisans in India, the rug took a few weeks to arrive. I did purchase a corresponding rug pad from Quince, though, which shipped immediately (you save $15 if you bundle both!). And when the rug-I-never-knew-I-needed finally came, it was absolute love at first unrolling.
Given the more affordable cost, I wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of quality, but this went above and beyond. First of all, it’s SO soft that I go out of my way to walk over it multiple times a day. It feels incredibly well-made and durable, too, via the low-pile flatweave design, and has stayed super clean thus far. True to form, I probably could have gotten a bigger size — I intended to put it underneath my bed, but it’s a little small. Instead, I ended up styling it in my bedroom’s alcove space, where it actually ties the nook together perfectly (and really ups the ante on my Zoom backgrounds). It’s simple and versatile enough to decorate anywhere, part of why I love it so dang much.
On top of the blush and ivory pairing, my newly beloved rug comes in two other equally cool and classic color combos, as well: black or gray, both with a light, natural tone. Sizes also range from 3′ x5′ to 9′ x 12′, starting at $129.90, to fit any room, big or small. Take my word for it: I’ve essentially waited my whole lifetime to find a rug I’ve deemed worthy, and I can confidently attest to the fact that this is The One. All in all, Quince rose to the rug-shopping occasion, and I couldn’t have asked for better design, craftsmanship, and cost. They also have a free 365-day return policy, but if you, too, struggle with rug sizing, here’s what I wish I’d read beforehand.
