How to Give Your Entryway a Seasonal Refresh
Entryways can be tricky when it comes to decor. We want them to greet us with warmth and make a great first impression when entering our homes. But on the other hand, they’re generally some of the smallest, narrowest spaces we have to work with — and still need to be uncluttered and functional. That’s where an RIY can help.
RIYs, or “refresh it yourself” projects, can be accomplished in an hour or less, and can have just as much impact as full-blown DIYs with much less effort. In our Instagram Stories, we asked about your top trouble spots in need of an RIY, and entryways were at the top of the list. Specifically, how to decorate them without sacrificing functionality. To find a solution, we sourced products from Target and came up with a few tips for a holiday entryway refresh that adds both substance and style.
Start with the Practicalities
A place to sit and take off your shoes, a coat rack, and a console table for your keys and wallet are all-season essentials for any entryway. To keep things especially practical for winter, we went with a sleek, functional console table that has an extra bottom shelf where durable, decorative coiled rope baskets could keep gloves, scarves, and hats within easy reach. It’s small enough to not get in the way, but also just deep enough to stash winter boots and an extra open-weave storage basket below. This one has leather handles and structured feet, making it easy to move from room to room. The brass accordion hook rack adds a modernist aesthetic and is adjustable to fit any space, and the faux fur ottoman is the perfect cozy (not to mention Instagram-worthy) spot to come in from the cold and de-shoe.
Then, Get Creative
Once all your practical needs are met, the rest of your entryway space is fair game for seasonal decor! For an entryway, you’ll want to keep a slim profile, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun. Take full advantage of any leftover wall space you have; in this space, we chose to go with elegant framed artwork of a wintery landscape to add a touch of the season. The brushed bronze frame matched our coat rack perfectly and could be used year-round with different seasonal art prints.
An ashwood serving bowl to hold mail and keys echoed the evergreen theme, along with tabletop trees in contrasting gold and flocked pine. We had just enough space to fit in an artificial pre-lit glittered balsam fir that really made things festive, and added a pop of color to the whole scene with two cheerful bright red stockings hung on the console table. All in, this was an RIY that could be accomplished in an hour or less, but will bring some festive cheer to your entryway all season long.
