A 1850s London Townhouse Is Like a Cozy Cottage Because of Clever Updates
It was a chance encounter when Ananya and John found their flat in West London in 2020. One evening, the couple stumbled upon a real estate agency and browsed the current listings in the window. A three-bedroom townhouse caught their attention because of its special location, and a couple of days later they toured the space.

“Before we were married, my husband and I had lived in another flat just a few doors down on the same street,” Ananya, a content creator, says. “We always joke that it was fate — us finding our future home one random evening.”
The pair, with their dog, Bertie, bought the 1850s home and started planning the renovations. Ananya grew up in New Delhi, India, surrounded by creativity, as her mom was a successful businesswoman and artist. The opportunity for creativity came at a seemingly perfect time.
“I am not sure how I ended up in academia and law school, but that was my life until 2021,” Ananya shares of her original career path. “I now make interiors and lifestyle content as a hobby! I came out of law school with severe depression and knew I needed a creative outlet, which also coincided with us redoing our flat, and sharing my flat on TikTok became a way for me to express myself.”
Ananya and John started renovating their home (including completely transforming their third floor to carve out additional space for a walk-in closet), and she began sharing their updates on her social media platforms. As she grew her following, she realized things about creative industries.
“I noticed that there was a major lack of representation for people, specifically like me, in any creative industries in the West,” Ananya says. “I am an Indian immigrant to the U.K., and there are so many South Asian and Indian textiles used in the British interior design industry, but I hardly ever see any South Asian people represented in the industry, let alone Indian immigrants. I wanted to change that. I am hoping to either become a full-time creator or transition into interiors in some way in the near future.“
