Eva Mendes’ Favorite Sponges Will Solve Your Biggest Gross Sponge Problem
The small yet mighty sponge cleans some of the biggest messes — and not just in the kitchen — which means it soaks up all things dirty and disgusting, becoming a hotbed for bacteria. In fact, research shows that the average sponge is actually dirtier than a toilet (gross!).
Luckily, there are solutions that’ll give you a better clean than a traditional sponge. One such brand is Skura Style. Skura, Swedish for “scour” and “scrub,” combines Scandinavian design, bold colors, and innovative technology to deliver high-performing cleaning tools.
The brand was founded in 2018, and has since caught the attention of actress Eva Mendes, who joined co-founders Linda Sawyer and Alison Matz as a co-owner and brand ambassador this year.
“I’m not the cook in the family, but the dishes are my domain. I find cleaning oddly exciting, and as a dish freak, I was shocked to learn that the sponge is the dirtiest item in my house! That’s when my obsession with Skura began. I’m beyond thrilled to announce that I’m not only an ambassador for Skura Style but I’m also co-owner in this innovative female-owned business,” said Mendes in a press release.
With all this press on a sponge, I needed to see if it was worth the hype. I got the chance to test out Eva’s Essentials (priced at $26), a collection of Mendes’ must-have products, that includes a four-pack of Skrubby Sponges, a two-pack of Very Skrubby, and a 10-pack of Wipe Envy.
The Skrubby Sponges are the brand’s most popular product. The four-pack features four bright, different colored sponges that are made to tell you when it’s time to toss them out. How? The design on top the sponge fades away as you use it. I can never remember to replace my sponges as often as I should, so this was a useful and fun feature to see in action.
I loved how firm yet flexible the sponges are. I’m not a fan of hard sponges that take time to mold into the ideal shape for cleaning or overly soft ones either. These sponges aren’t like that. They are durable and bouncy, in the best way possible.
But the greatest quality about these sponges is the fact that they don’t smell at all. Say goodbye to sponge stink! These sponges are antimicrobial, odor resistant, and made of polyurethane foam (instead of cellulose like traditional sponges), which allows them to be quick-drying while keeping their shape. If you plan to try anything from this brand, I recommend getting these sponges. It’s beloved for a reason.
For tougher messes, you’ll want to use the Very Skrubby, a double-sided heavy-duty scouring pad that’s flexible enough to get into every nook and cranny. Wipe Envy is the brand’s multi-purposeful microfiber cloth. I liked that there was a 10-pack so that I could designate cloths for different areas (with plenty of backup cloths to spare). They are also machine washable, and so far, still going strong.
Eva’s Essentials are available only on the Skura Style website, and the sponges are sold through a subscription service or as a pack of 12 and 16. You can also shop for a four-pack of sponges on Amazon if you want to start small and try it out.
After trying all of Mendes’ favorite items, I can see why she liked the brand so much. These sponges have been a bright addition to my kitchen sink, and it is so easy to remember when to swap them out for the next color. (Green is next for me!)
