A Tiny Boston Home Has a Cute Breakfast Nook and an Even Cuter Bunny

I’m a 31-year-old writer who recently moved back to Boston after spending around six years in New York. I’ve shared this apartment with my free-roaming house rabbit, Pillow (who sadly died last spring), and now with my new muppet of a bun, Croissant!

I’ve moved A LOT over the years, and with each new apartment, I’ve really tried to get better at paring down my tchotchkes and belongings because I feel more calm and focused in life when my home is a little less cluttered. That said, I have a million plants—many of which were acquired as living “souvenirs” on trips I’ve taken. While this apartment is definitely on the smaller side, I think the relatively tall ceilings and overall brightness makes it feel open yet cozy at the same time. I love the beautiful hardwood floors and the fact that I have an eating nook in the kitchen—I’ve never really been able to have a kitchen table before, so that’s kind of a big deal for me!

Also I should note that I’m currently in the process of moving out of this apartment—I took these photos (and many more) as a way to memorialize it before re-painting the walls and taking everything apart.

Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: Airy, bright, warm, mid-century, and a little bohemian.

What is your favorite room and why? My favorite room is probably the living room. It feels very open, particularly with the wide doorway that leads into the kitchen so that you can see the pop of coral in the dining nook. And my bathroom is tiny, but I love that there’s a full-sized window in the shower to let in a breeze on warm days!

Also, this isn’t a room, per se, but there’s a really old school built-in linen closet and drawers in the tiny “hallway” where the living room, bathroom, and bedroom meet, and it’s been really terrific to have!

If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? I wish the kitchen were bigger and had a dishwasher. And a deck/patio would also be nice!

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? I recently ordered a really neutral looking terrazzo vase from Trouva, because the vases I have all seem to be the ones you get for free from florists. Now when I bring home flowers, they’ll seem a little more legit!

My biggest purchase for this apartment was probably my West Elm couch. I’m obsessed with the wood detailing. I’ve been trying to rid myself of IKEA furniture over the years, and my old KARLSTAD couch was the last of it to go! Other than that, I buy a lot of toys for Croissant that he touches once and then ignores.

Any advice for creating a home you love? I’m trying to teach myself this all the time, but I think it’s so important to try and restrict your souvenirs etc. to things that are useful—like a trivet, or even a beer koozie! Otherwise, you end up with little things cluttering every surface. With that said, you can never have too many plants. I have a String of Pearls plant hanging in my shower, and it adds a little spa vibe to the space that I truly love. Plants in the bathroom are the best!
