I am one of those people who makes the bed first thing every morning. And by “make,” I mean hiding messy sheets underneath a slightly straightened comforter and leaving the corners untucked and hanging off the side of the bed. So when I saw a clever Apartment Therapy tip suggesting that a spatula could make the bed-making process easier, I knew I had to try it.

Why a Spatula Deserves a Spot in Your Bedroom

This original hack was shared by Cindi Yang and is so simple. Use a spatula to tuck in the sheets around your bed, pushing it into the crevice. This is great for anyone that can’t easily lift their mattress up, and it works in a matter of minutes.

What Happened When I Kept a Spatula by My Bed

I purchased a brand-new, never-touched-food spatula for this hack, but you can use any spatula (especially if you have an extra one) available to you. I started by using the spatula to tuck in my fitted sheet, which is always super wrinkled when I wake up. Normally, it’s tough to get my hands into that tight space between the mattress and the frame — but the spatula fit right in and smoothed everything down with ease.

Then I pulled the flat sheet and blanket back into place and used the spatula again to tuck them neatly into the same gap. No need to lift the mattress or wrestle with heavy corners. I couldn’t believe how well it worked.

I live in a studio apartment, so my bed is basically the centerpiece of the room. Now that I’m using the spatula every morning, the bed looks much more put together — no messy sheets peeking out, no half-tucked blankets. The hack is so good that I now permanently keep a spatula in my nightstand drawer.
