Los Angeles isn’t just one city: It’s a sprawling collection of neighborhoods and towns that have distinct personalities and lifestyles all their own. After having lived in a busier, more central part of town for many years, Katie Zamprioli fell in love with Sunland, a community on the northern outskirts of LA. This tranquil locale sits apart from the urban hustle and bustle, with plenty of hiking trails, walkable local schools, and neighborly vibes.
“Sunland is a gorgeous, sleepy little mountain town with Joshua Tree vibes,” she says. “We sip our coffee by the window or outside, looking at the mountains. I never thought I’d find this kind of peace in LA. And it’s a very artistic community as well.” That creative vibe is baked into Katie’s home: The previous owner was a welder, and Katie hired a local stained glass artist to do the custom windows in the living room.
And though they’re not exactly artists, there’s another population that lends Sunland color: the wild peacocks known to wander around town. They were originally introduced to the nearby Los Angeles County Arboretum — one of Katie’s favorite spots for a family hike — before migrating to Sunland.
From peacocks to cacti, the local biome has a big influence on Katie’s style. Her small front yard is planted with California natives and desert blooms. Inside, there are still more plants, from the potted succulents and monsteras to the bud vases of wildflowers in the kitchen. Katie’s color palette reflects the sunsets out her back door, from the warm terracotta walls of her bedroom to the lush green and pink wallpaper on the living room accent wall.
“I’ve seen some of the most beautiful sunsets here,” she said. “And earthy colors make me feel grounded.”
The colors make a calming complement to Katie’s more-is-more style, anchoring her eclectic mashups of styles and eras, which often involve finds from a local thrift shop. In the living room, a 1980s arc lamp mingles with an antique-inspired sofa and Baroque-style tasseled throw pillows. The dining area mixes a rustic wood table with a colorful mid-century chandelier and antiquity-inspired sculpture.
Katie’s home isn’t that big, but it does offer just enough vertical space for one of her favorite decor trends. “I love gallery walls,” she says. “I love putting them together. I love the art — particularly vintage art — and knowing what the artist has poured into their piece.”
And while her gallery walls look picture-perfect, Katie doesn’t fuss over designing them. She starts with one large piece, working out from there, but the rest is trial and error. “There are a lot of holes in these walls,” she says.
That responsive approach — decorating by feel — is evident throughout Katie’s design choices. If she’s on a hike and a flower or some other natural element inspires her, she notes its color or pattern and thinks on how it can become a part of her home’s aesthetic.
“If I love something, I figure out a way to make it fit in my home,” Katie says. “That’s the fun part about being eclectic and maximalist: You can bring many pieces together in a way that’s unique to you.”
