In my world, there are few things more exciting than customizing an IKEA piece of furniture so that it ceases to be that piece you see in everyone’s home. You want it to be strangely familiar whilst super chic. You want it to be the sort of thing that makes your friends ask, “Uh, where did you get that?” Which is why I was delighted when BEMZ asked me to design some new products that make an IKEA sofa all those things. BEMZ makes custom covers and interchangeable legs for IKEA furniture. The covers are made to order in Europe, and you may remember the cool, new legs I designed a while ago. Now, I’ve dived back in with a new line of slipcovers that are just transformative.

Winter Moss on a Karlstad Sofa with a Winston leg

Working with BEMZ over the past two years, I’ve been dying to introduce a rich, cozy fabric line to the Maxwell leg collection that I knew our readers and others would love. I wanted to pull from the fashion world with rich, bright colors, and I wanted to pull from the upholstery world with soft, warm fabrics that would invite you to lay down and take a nap on your sofa.

One of my favorite combos: Brick Red corduroy on the Soderhamn sofa with Terence legs

So, when I got the call, I instantly started looking around for inspiration and found it in a pair of soft cropped women’s corduroy trousers at an online boutique. The more I followed the corduroy, the more I saw big, thick corduroy being used in fashion in a way that I’d not noticed before. Not thin, skimpy corduroy, but plush and surprising corduroy. This is what I wanted to put on a sofa.

This collection plays with big, beefy corduroy ribbing in six new colors. This is a fabric collection that you’ll want to touch and put your cheek up against. It’s a collection that will turn your living room into the retreat you always wanted.

This collection offers six colorways: three classics (Peacoat, Moss Green and Brick Red—Apartment Therapy’s signature hue) and three contemporary choices (Blush and Seagrass, trendier colors that look poised to stay with us, and Wild Deer—my play on retro brown). The slipcovers are made for a range of IKEA’s most popular sofas and chairs, and the prices start at $149.
