This Spider Web Rug DIY Is Going Viral on TikTok
In the weeks leading up to Halloween, something strange and unusual happened. A handful of Halloween-themed rugs went viral on TikTok — the most notable being the T.J. Maxx ghost rug.
But because the demand for these rugs was so high, many were unable to get their hands on them. So, one TikTok user took matters into her own hands by crafting her very own DIY spider web rug, and she taught her followers how to do the same.
“I bought this entrance mat from Dollar Tree and made my own spider web rug for my kitchen,” TikTok user Juliana Valencia (@jull.colors) wrote in her now-viral September video.
She picked up an unassuming rubber doormat from Dollar Tree (though you can find these entrance mats almost everywhere) and used a white Posca marker to sketch out her spider web design. Chalk would work great to sketch out the design, too — that way, if you make a mistake, you can dab it away with a damp cloth.
Valencia then cut out the spider web shape (you can use a pair of sharp scissors or a box cutter), leaving about an inch border around the spider web design. She also used a lighter to seal the edges of the doormat to stop any fraying and to smooth out her cut lines.
Finally, she went over her marker lines with white acrylic paint, let it dry, and then cleaned up the lines with black acrylic paint. “I’m so in love with this,” she captioned the reveal shot over on her Instagram page.
With over 100,000 likes on her video, Valencia is starting a new viral trend. Another TikTok user tried out her DIY project on an old car mat.
And if you don’t want to risk injuring yourself, find a half-circle doormat and simply paint in your spider web motif like this TikTok user did.
Take that, viral ghost rug!
