A plaid moment for an inviting bedroom oasis

Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: Hollyn and I are somewhat recent grads — I have a degree in interior design and she is a nurse in a Labor and Delivery Unit here in Birmingham. We are a modern day Will and Grace with a love for antiquing and house decor shopping together — so Hollyn’s love for every little antique and my eye for perfectly curated vignettes go hand in hand.

Modern touches add new life to vintage finds

My love for old houses and quaint areas drew me to this little rental in Highland Park and we signed the lease the day we looked at it. Its cracked plaster walls, leaky roof, and original hardwood floors only add to the character that this 100-year-old house exudes. It is not much but it is our home and invites everyone that comes to our door to come in and stay a while.

Who wouldn't love a meal in this dining room?

What is your favorite room and why? My favorite room would have to be our open living room and dining room — from our curated gallery wall, to our skirted console table that I had made for the giant wall in our dining room. I love it all. Whether it be a friendly dinner under our quaint dining chandelier or curling up on our sofas to watch a movie, the room is so comfortable. I love every single detail from the floor up — 100-year-old floors, Greek-inspired sisal rug, down-filled sofas, antique gallery wall, and an intricate ceiling detail.

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? The last thing that I bought for our home was a vase for the center of our table. It is so sleek and modern. Such a good addition.

Any advice for creating a home you love? BUY THINGS YOU LOVE. If you aren’t sold in the store, you won’t love it at home. Also, don’t play the game of, “Oh, where will I put it?” because you will find a place. Chances are, it will not be there if you come back.
