Why we have a crush on this property
It rubs me the wrong way when I hear “Mad Men” referenced anytime there’s a glimpse of midcentury modern design. There’s more to midcentury modern than “Mad Men!” I yell to myself.
But I didn’t bristle when I saw the listing for this midcentury co-op for sale in the Bronx, which references “Mad Men” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” in its description. That’s because this home is the real deal: a 1963-era unit in New York City, the very place where both shows were set, and a spitting image of a place Don Draper might visit after a day at the office.
The two-bedroom apartment, situated right near Yankee Stadium, is a retro masterpiece. Its owners, one of whom is an architectural historian, have decked out the place in groovy ‘60s flair, from the kitchen to the bedrooms. It’s part-time capsule, part “sky pad,” per the listing agents, resembling the Eero Saarinen suite in the TWA Hotel at JFK Airport.
Highlights include a new kitchen with period-accurate details, like wood ceilings, dark wood cabinets, stone accents, commercial-grade vinyl floors, and a pull-out cubby for a microwave. A large central foyer leads to an open-concept living space with views of Manhattan. A built-in woodstove warms the home office, while a rust-colored dining room complements its vintage-style light fixtures and built-in shelving. Newly retiled (yet still authentic-looking) bathrooms, plus a private balcony, seal the deal.
It’s all on the market for under $500,000. The home asks $449,500 and is listed by Ariela Heilman and Deborah Miller with Brown Harris Stevens.
