After Years of Neglect, This 1883 Edinburgh Flat Now “Oozes Cozy Country Luxury”
A couple and their two children had been looking for a place to purchase in Edinburgh for more than a year before coming across this 1,260-square-foot, three-bedroom apartment. “It was in a sad state of disrepair when we purchased it, however, that enabled us to view it as a blank canvas in which to introduce our dream features,” the homeowner writes.

“In Scotland, when you buy a property the title deed report includes the whole history of the property and all previous owners,” the homeowner explains. “From this we could see that the land was first assigned to be a building in 1861, with the building completed around 1883. This was quite a thrill to discover.”
The homeowner says that the flat had been used as a rental for students for a decade, and was basically in “a state of neglect” when they bought the space. The couple worked closely with their architect, Jens Bergmark from Bergmark Architects, to update the home’s layout.
They “completely renovated the kitchen, the middle bathroom, and created space for a second full bathroom. This second bathroom is a fantastic addition and modernizes family living in this Victorian flat,” the homeowner describes.
“We rotated the swing of internal doors, removed non-original fireplaces, reopening the original living room fireplace and chimney, removed old boiler cupboards, and installed a new central heating system, with cast-iron radiators (to fit the interior design aesthetic). We had all the original wooden sash case[ment] windows refurbished, and wooden shutters refreshed and put back in working order,” the homeowner continues explaining of the remodel, for which building-planning permission was finished in 2023.
When it came to the interior design vibes, the couple worked with Susan Wall at EDINteriors. “She was fabulous and exactly understood the assignment,” the homeowner writes. “Following completion the flat oozes, cozy, country luxury.”
