When interior designer Emilia Callero and her husband bought this house — a four-bedroom, 2,200-square-foot Portland Craftsman bungalow built in the 1920s — they started renovating on day one.

“We bought the home in 2016 and knew that the first thing that needed to be done was the kitchen,” Emilia begins. “It had hardly any kitchen cabinets, no appliances, and three doorways leading into it! It was a floor plan nightmare. The day we got the keys to our home is the day we started demo on the kitchen.”

On a tight budget, they did nearly all the work themselves, “from demo to design,” except they did hire people to install drywall and did have custom kitchen cabinets made. “At this point in time, we did not have children, so we had the time to work on these projects and didn’t feel as pressured to finish by a certain date. However, the washing of the dishes in that bathtub is the worst, so that kept us moving along QUICKLY,” Emilia writes.

“While we were undergoing the kitchen renovation, we also did some ‘light’ work in the adjoining rooms. We took down wallpaper in the dining room and living room and gave those spaces fresh coats of paint along with some additional architectural features, like wainscoting,” Emilia describes.

Now eight years after first purchasing the house, they’ve transformed nearly every inch of the home, and have grown their family, too. Their two children are 5-year-old Olive and 2-year-old Lucca.
