Cinematographer Kristel Elizabeth Gomez saw lots of Spanish-style bungalows and retro 1970s condos when she was looking for a home five months ago. But when she came across this apartment with her real estate agent, she was immediately drawn to the brick interior. “It reminded me of my apartment in Brooklyn; it gave me an urban feel in a city that could sometimes feel far from it,” Kristel explains.

The 711-square-foot apartment — located in a restored 1925 Art Deco building near Koreatown — had been vacant for “quite a while” and needed some cosmetic work when Kristel purchased it, but that’s how she was able to get a good deal.

“As a visually creative person, I wanted to bring work to home by creating what to me feels like a movie set,” she explains of the apartment’s interior style, which is a mix of Kristel’s personality and the home’s architecture.

"My kitchen nook is where I spend time planning meals and starting my day. Facebook Marketplace is the best. Not only is it affordable but it’s a sustainable way to furnish a space."

“I wanted to mix my love for mid-century furniture, as well as some warmth and color with gold accents to stay true to the Art Deco era,” she continues, explaining that much of the cosmetic work needed was painting and “resurfacing the kitchen counters.”

Kristel says she used the “color drenching technique to separate each area of the apartment” and added wallpaper in the kitchen, her favorite area in the whole apartment.

“Not only is it because I love to cook, but it also gets the most natural light in the apartment. Perfect space to spend my mornings drinking my matcha in the cozy kitchen nook,” writes Kristel, who shares her home with a 5-year-old rescue dog named Sage
