This Stunning 1930s LA Townhouse Feels Like It’s in the French Countryside
Danica Andler is an art director, illustrator, and graphic designer with a particular affinity for hospitality work like restaurants and events, and with a “deep love for all things interior design.”
“Those interests combined as a passion for designing dynamic, large-scale installations, which inspired me to create my wallpaper line. The goal, from the very beginning, was to produce gestural, hand-drawn imagery and, in turn, produce unique surface designs that convey the nuance of the drawings throughout a space,” explains Danica, who lives in LA with her writer husband, Alex, and their two dogs.
When the couple moved to Los Angeles from New York City, this home — located in a French Normandy-style townhouse from the 1930s — had just the right energy, style, and access to backyard citrus trees that Danica was looking for.
“This house was built in 1934, and it has an unmistakable Art Deco, Old Hollywood style. I immediately fell in love with the original tile work, ornate fireplace, corbels, and other one-of-a-kind details,” she writes.
At 1,500 square feet, the townhouse has plenty of rooms they use in ways that fit their lifestyle. “I think a dining room and a library are a natural combination. For us, our dining room was the only room in the house with walls to spare, so it was a perfect locale for vertical book casing. Not only do we find ourselves using that room daily, but I also love that it acts as an endless source of conversation topics at dinner parties,” Danica writes. But, of course, for two people in creative fields, Danica says it was “inevitable” that they would also “make a home with space for creative projects to pop up at any time. Design-wise, if we like it, it goes together, and that’s never proved untrue.”
