An ’80s House in Sydney Is Getting Updated One Nook at a Time
Sidrah Hammad, her husband, and two kids have owned this three-bedroom house in Sydney for seven years: We live in an ’80s build. My husband and my two girls moved here about seven years ago. We fell in love with the natural light this house gets, its floor-to-ceiling windows, and the backyard. I knew this is where I wanted my kids to grow up.
My home reflects my whimsical personality. I’m a Pakistani Australian and my roots are reflected in my style. My house is an eclectic mix of both my home countries. The bright colors and decor pieces sprinkled throughout touch base with my birth country, Pakistan. The sunny interiors and the native wallpapers pay homage to the country I now call home, Australia.
Describe your home’s style in five words or fewer: My home is an eclectic mix of cultures and colors. It is whimsical and quirky, and most of all it’s home.
What is your favorite room and why? My favorite room is probably the kitchen. This is because I renovated it myself. I learned skills that I never knew I could learn to give my kitchen a makeover. It is now bright and colorful, and makes my heart happy every time I look at it.
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? The last thing I bought was a piece of rustic reclaimed wood glass holder decor piece from our trip to Bali. I love it as a centerpiece.
Any advice for creating a home you love? Follow your heart — not the trends. Your home is a reflection of you, and it is the one place where you should be able to feel who you are.
Thanks, Sidrah!
