After renting this house for a few years, Chen and Maor purchased it and decided to update the dated, 1980s style home. With three kids (10, 7, and 4 years old), the home would also have to be organized and function well, too. The couple worked with Carmit Oron, a Sunnyvale-based interior designer, to remodel the entire home, including the living room, kitchen, and two and a half bathrooms. The end result is definitely hip and youthful with a modern mid-century vibe thanks to contemporary furnishings and bold color, like the custom Fireclay tiles in the kitchen. But it also has better function built in, like a more efficient kitchen, and custom bathroom vanities that look good and work well.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: We are a very functional family that shares a similar vision and desire for the simple and functional that feels cozy and welcoming. We love mid-century design and love colors and patterns.
Inspiration: We had fragments of ideas, colors, and patterns that we liked and more specific functional goals for our house (we wanted to change the purpose of our existing living spaces) but it was really Carmit and her past experience and work that brought everything together for us.
Favorite Element: The vanities! Custom, unique to us, extremely functional, and yet special and beautiful.
Biggest Challenge: The kitchen. We wanted to open the kitchen up, which meant losing valuable counter and storage space so we had to design the kitchen cabinets in a very efficient way to we could preserve the cooking space–we cook a lot.
Proudest DIY: The fireplace renovation! We had an old, ugly fireplace that can’t be replaced with a new wood fireplace (California law) and gas was too expensive, so we had to work around it with a custom-made new frame, windows, and new tiling that really made the old fireplace disappear.
Biggest Indulgence: Our Wolf Range, one of the most used appliances in the house and brings smiles every time we use it.
Best Advice: The introduction to Carmit, our designer, was the best advice and first step we made–everything was pretty simple from that point forward. Working with the right people that truly care and can guide you through this complex project can make all the difference in the world.
