Why we have a crush on this property
If you were to live in a utopia, would you picture spending your days in a log cabin with oak floors and exposed beams? For a group of German separatists in the early 1800s, that’s exactly what their ideal life looked like. They founded the village of Zoar, or “place of refuge,” in Ohio to escape religious persecution, and from 1817 to 1898, they operated a utopian community. Zoar Village is remembered as one of the most successful communal settlements in American history.
Today, much of the original village’s layout remains — and so do many of its houses. One such home, a circa 1820 log cabin, is on the market right now. The two-bedroom, two and a half bathroom abode is listed for $300,000, and it’s a National Historic Landmark.
From the outside, the house shows off two facades: one side of clapboard and the other of log siding. A small, fenced-in yard leads to the front porch, where a porch swing makes for the perfect place to take a load off before heading inside.
Historical details abound on the interior: think-cut oak floors, exposed beams, built-ins, a fireplace, and custom-made doors are just a few of them. Modern conveniences blend in, too, in the form of updated fixtures and appliances in the kitchen and bathrooms.
My favorite part of this place is, hands down, the kitchen. Not only does it have a copper farmhouse sink and brick floors, but it showcases my favorite kind of Tiffany-style stained glass pendant lamp hanging over the dining table.
Other enviable features include a three-car garage with an efficiency apartment, a garden, and lots of closets and storage. The home is listed by Katherine Campbell with Street Sotheby’s International Realty.
