2023 Is Going to Smell Like “Who Even Knows,” According to This Candle Company
Though 2022 has certainly been a breath of fresh air compared to the two years that came before it, this year has still been, well, strange. Anecdote Candles kind of called it when they said their 2022 candle smells like “high hopes and low expectations.” So what can we expect for 2023? According to Anecdote, “who even knows?”
Anecdote Candles has mastered the art of pairing scents with hilarious phenomena like “Adulting,” “Athleisure,” “Quarter-Life Crisis,” and “Comfort Zone.” And in recent years, the company has begun predicting what the year ahead will bring.

For 2023, orange, lemon, gilded amber, and ginger flower come together to elicit “an unexpected blend of cautious optimism and complex overthinking … [But] just when you think you’re ready for what’s next, notes of tonka bean, clove, and cedarwood bring an element of intrigue, reminding you that anything can happen.”
Anecdote Candles are hand-poured and made with a coconut-soy wax blend and phthalate-free fragrance oils. The 2023 candle comes in standard jar size that has a 40- to 60-hour burn time.
And if you’re not quite ready to think ahead to next year already, you can still pick up Anecdote’s 2022 candle. It’s a mix of citron and jasmine.
“End the year just how it started with high hopes and low expectations,” Anecdote writes of 2022. “Opening notes of orange, citron, and bergamot zest remind you that anything is possible, while a musky base of white cedar, lemon blossom, and jasmine petals ground you in reality.”
If the 2020s have taught us anything so far, it’s that planning anything far in advance is can be a dumb idea. So, how will things shape up next year? Who even knows?
