“Before I moved in, the apartment was a blank canvas, just white walls and the modern kitchen,” begins Jean Pierre Ortiz of this 230-square-foot studio apartment he moved into almost a year ago.

This photo of the modern kitchen was taken before Jean added some paint color to the TV accent wall. He also DIYed the foyer's open storage unit. "I bought it from Amazon and spray painted the connectors burgundy to give it a more mid-century DWR vibes," he writes.

“As a interior designer, I like every style; however, for my own place, I wanted an eclectic, colorful yet cozy style. I wanted to mix elements that also pop the city style; coming from Puerto Rico, this was really important to me. I wanted a chance of style and environment. But also wanted a cozy place to recharge when I come back from work or a social event,” he continues.

The hanging light fixture is from HAY. A similar round table and petite sideboard like the ones Jean has can be found at Home Depot. Find a similar small metal stool from Zara. This Etsy sconce looks similar to the one near Jean's bed. Jean says that hiding under his queen-sized bed are Muji boxes to store clothes and other personal belongings.

“It was really important to me to live alone, so I decided to choose a studio apartment — also it was my first apartment in the city,” Jean admits. “I certainly had a budget for this new place, knowing how expensive the city can be. However, I took my time to source every piece; [with] a studio apartment, every inch counts — each piece has its purpose and style.”

The circular lamp is Studio Baldo. The statue is from Misgana African Art.

Jean says his favorite design style is a sort of modern industrial look, and he found ways to bring that look inside the tiny space. He was also looking to create hotel suite vibes while “having exactly what I needed for my day-by-day living.”

Jean favors Aromatech products and Keap candles to create a relaxing vibe in his small home .

It’s not easy fitting in a foyer, living area, dining/desk area, and bedroom area in 230 square feet AND have the space look and feel chic, but Jean’s done it. Part of his secret to chic spaces is taking the time to source for unique pieces, advising that you should be aiming to make a space your own, and not follow trends.

The rug is from Loloi Rugs.

“I like that every piece of my house is a conversation piece and has a story behind it,” he writes.
