30 Plants, One Cat and One Super Cool Person Share a Toronto Apartment
Name: Terra
Location: St Clair West, Toronto, Ontario
The basics: 8 months, rented | 700 square feet
Terra’s apartment is one part plant conservatory, one part friendship coven and one part personal sanctuary. After apartment hopping around Toronto, Terra settled into her new space. Taking root physically and metaphorically, she has filled her apartment with plenty of plants and tons of good vibes.
Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: I live here with my cat, Pyewacket, and 30 some odd plants. I have lived in Toronto for almost 8 years and this is my NINTH apartment here. It is also the first place that I’ve lived where I feel like I can stay for several years and put down roots, which I’ve taken literally by surrounding myself with many plants to nurture and take care of. I work as a community manager, and work from home a few days a week. And I am very fortunate to have a strong community of friends, through involvement in politics, through professional networks, through mutual interest in practicing witchcraft, and more. So it is really nice to have a space where I can invite people over and create a hub and home for like minded folks. My favorite thing is to have someone over, cook dinner, open a bottle of wine, and reconnect. Lastly, I have found that having a home that I like to spend time in is great for my mental and physical health. My morning routine involves getting up and doing yoga, then cooking myself a nice breakfast, drink tea, meditate, read at my table (or look at dogs in the park across the street) and then get ready for my day. I leave the house in a much better mood if I take time for myself in the morning.
What is your favorite room and why? It’s hard to choose, but I am going to have to say the kitchen. It’s where I spend most of my mornings, the view is so nice I often work at the kitchen table instead of my work desk, and I make the most memories here: heart to hearts with friends over a home cooked meal, sharing a bottle of wine with my partner, I even had a friend give me a tattoo at this table.
If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? There would be an elevator. I love being on the top floor because there’s no noise from above, but it’s a four floor walk up. I like it for the workout, but when I’m carrying groceries or plants or other heavy things home it is quite daunting.
Which fictional character would be most at home in your place? Morticia Addams. Not for the witchy aspect, but she was always good with plants.
Terra’s words of wisdom: Don’t break the bank, fill it with meaningful objects rather than aesthetic ones.
Thanks, Terra!
