Why we have a crush on this property

Care to spend your days inside an eco-friendly oasis along the coast of Maine? This jet-black contemporary home for sale in Blue Hill offers a respite from well… you know, everything.

This barn-like construction is set in a picture-perfect seaside town, and is equal parts warm and sunny. Built in 2016, the home’s design was inspired by the architecture of Maine’s general stores and grange halls. It’s a mix between a passive solar and a net-zero house, which means it requires little to no energy for heating or cooling and has a highly reduced carbon footprint. Huge windows let sunlight (and warmth) in from the south, while part of the roof is covered in solar panels.

Inside, warmth literally radiates from the floorboards in its open-concept living spaces. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves line the walls of the first floor, while windows look out to the garden. An airy kitchen boasts turquoise cabinets, a farmhouse sink, and an enclosed pantry, while the first-floor bathroom offers a cedar-lined shower. Upstairs, the master bedroom features a walk-in closet and a desk nook, while the second-floor bathroom flaunts an antique clawfoot tub.

The house sits on just over 6 bucolic acres, which feature a gurgling stream, hiking paths, and proximity to old blueberry fields. There’s also a small cabin on the property—a perfect spot for an artist’s studio or writer’s retreat.

What the home’s current owner, author Jessica Kerwin Jenkins, loves most about the property is those nearby blueberry fields.

“On summer mornings, I send the kids and houseguests out to forage for breakfast and make blueberry pancakes or serve them over granola, though usually our foragers eat a whole berry breakfast out in the field,” she says.

That and the concealed cove down the road.

“We searched for ten years for the perfect plot to build on, and one of our requirements was that it be within walking distance to a fantastic beach,” Kerwin Jenkins explains, “So, just five minutes walk—or two minutes by bike—you’ll find the most spectacular little cove. It’s legendary—truly one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been, but it’s not on most maps, so it’s never crowded.”
