In 2021, after moving several times, Riska and Irvan Nurjanah decided to purchase a property in bustling Jakarta, Indonesia. While it was nice on the couple’s budget that their previous homes came furnished, it held them back from ever truly feeling at home.

So, after searching online, the pair found a 376-square-foot “nest” (as they lovingly refer to the space) located in BSD City in Jakarta and toured it soon after.

“When we came to see it in person, our eyes were immediately drawn to its balcony with large windows, as well as its west-facing position, offering stunning sunset views,” Riska says. “We instantly fell in love with this unit.”

Their love for the two-bedroom apartment strengthened because it needed a major facelift, as it hadn’t been updated since it was initially built. “We were very happy and excited because, like getting a blank canvas, we could fill the apartment according to our imagination and embark on our journey to make it our ‘home,’” Riska shares.

Because the couple had limited square footage, they made the space feel airy by using multi-functional furniture (think: their sleeper sofa in the living room or foldable kitchen island) and accentuating a neutral color palette throughout.

“To create a comforting Zen-like ambiance, our rooms are also dominated by wooden colors and textures, such as on the floors, kitchen cabinets, and other furniture,” Riska explains. “We complete the look by placing several plants in every corner of the room.”
