Smart Organization Hacks Make This 400-Square-Foot Home a “Slice of Heaven”
When first-time homebuyers Tina Barisky and her fiancé, Rob, were looking for a space to call their own three years ago, they looked high and “really low,” as she described their search. After an exhaustive hunt, by the time they got to tour their current apartment, they weren’t positive that buying a place was in the cards. Luckily, they were wrong. “Our little apartment is a 400-square-foot slice of heaven … when I walked into this space, I knew immediately that I wanted to make it work,” Barisky writes.

The couple was likely relieved to find a space, but the home (which cost around C$349,000) posed new and exciting challenges. “At 400 square feet, it was much smaller than anywhere else I had lived before; the bedroom is literally just a room for a bed, and the closet is only three feet wide,” Barisky, who now offers space-planning services, shares.
Even though the limited square feet pressed Barisky to think outside the box (she shares solutions on TikTok!), it was worth it. “The floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking parks and green space made it feel bright, peaceful, and welcoming,” Barisky writes. “Making the space our own while managing to fit all of our belongings has been an incredible journey and an exercise in deciding what things we really actually need in order to find happiness. And I couldn’t be happier about our choice to live here.”
