Film and television writer and creator Leah Gauthier wanted to do something specific in the 530-square-foot Vancouver apartment she’s owned for six years. As someone in a creative field, she wanted her home to “be a representation” of her brain.

Leah's latest and greatest thrift store find is this set of three ceramic balloons that were primary colors, but she spray-painted them chrome.

When she first moved in, however, the one-bedroom apartment featured an “egregious lack of whimsy,” so she would have her work cut out for her. Thankfully, she was ready for the task. “I’m always dreaming up ideas. The more creative the better,” she admits.

She added some paint, installed patterned wallpaper in key spots, and even got influenced by TikTok to transform the kitchen opening into an archway.

But the thing she did the most in this space was attack the decor very intentially. And she filled it “full of thrifted finds that I believe were once owned by badass, creative icons.”

Leah's collection of mid-century stone fruit is her favorite element in the whole apartment. "I have so much of it I often fear my apartment will collapse from the weight of it. This will not stop me from collecting more," she admits.

You’ll find a pretty large collection of mid-century stone fruit. There’s an assemblage of carved, wooden sailors. And perhaps most importantly, “animal print is a neutral.”
