Why we have a crush on this property

This picture-perfect cottage in New Orleans sprang onto the market with guns blazing. It’s been viewed thousands of times on real estate portals like Zillow and Redfin, which means the clock’s ticking if you’d like to put in an offer.

The three-bedroom home is known as a “shotgun house,” an architectural style that’s thought to have originated in New Orleans. Shotgun houses are narrow, one-story homes built on a series of brick piers. These rectangular abodes measure up to 12 feet wide, are about three to six rooms deep, and typically have front-gabled roofs. The name “shotgun house” is said to come from the idea that a bullet shot through the front door could fly clean through the house and out the open back door. Another theory says the name comes from the African word togun, a Yoruba term that means “gathering place.”

This uptown cottage with bones from 1910 is considered a side-gallery shotgun, thanks to a long hallway that runs along most of the home. All 1,550 square feet of the place are a treat for the eyes—each of its six connected rooms have antique flair, from huge windows and original hardwoods to soaring 12-foot ceilings.

Step through the front door to be met with a wall of books. From there, an elegant living area and a two-way faux fireplace connect to a good-sized dining room. Beyond it, a sparkling kitchen with open shelving, an oven with a hood, and butcher-block countertops lead to the three bedrooms, plus a full bathroom with a clawfoot tub. Off of the last bedroom, a set of French doors open to a screened-in patio with a ceiling fan. It overlooks a sizable backyard, where there’s plenty of room for sunbathing and al fresco dining.
