This 625-square-foot Washington, D.C., apartment was a blank slate in a 1920s building with plenty of charm, but also plenty of room for Kate to add her own personality when she moved in five years ago.

“I’ve lived in this apartment for five years now, and I’ve made a lot of changes steadily over the years,” Kate begins. “My style is definitely mid-century modern — I have a lot of genuine mid-century pieces, plus newer items inspired by that period. I’ve always loved hunting thrift stores and antique malls for unique pieces, especially art and little trinkets. I have items that have belonged to or been made by family all over the apartment. It’s my cozy little happy place!”

While mid-century modern is the “most accurate way” to describe Kate’s apartment, she definitely has other elements sprinkled in, “particularly when it comes to art.”

“I’ve always been an introvert and would describe myself as a homebody. I love sharing my apartment with other people (both in person and online!) but first and foremost, I’ve designed it for myself. I spend the vast majority of my time here, and have worked to make sure it feels comfortable and personal. I’m very close with my family, and have a lot of art, trinkets, and even furniture that’s come from family members. Some of it has even been made by family!”
