Why we have a crush on this property
Not everyone has the singular privilege of living inside a building that’s on the National Register of Historic Places. This fairytale-like mansion for sale in Red Wing, Minn., is—but its historic designation is only one of its many stunning selling points.
The place was originally built in 1875 as a Second Empire mansion for a businessman named Theodore Sheldon. If you’re an architecture buff, you may know that Second Empire homes are characterized by mansard roofs. But this house doesn’t have one—just a protruding tower on the third level and a flat, open roof. That’s because sometime in the mid-1900s, the former mansard roof took on some water damage. Instead of paying to fix it, the owner eliminated the roof altogether, converting the mansion into the flat-top Italianate it is today.
It’s an eye-catching home mansard roof or not. Stepping through the double front doors reveals an almost overwhelming amount of period details: intricate crown molding, built-ins, window shutters, pocket doors, and woodwork. The home has a total of seven fireplaces (and seven bedrooms), not to mention some seriously impressive contemporary chandeliers and one-of-a-kind wallpaper. Outside, there’s a carriage house around the back, and upstairs, that third-story tower opens to a lovely roof deck area.
This historical piece of eye candy is listed by Krista Wolter with Coldwell Banker Realty for $950,000.
