Being “avid nature lovers,” Maddison Milton and her partner, Kyle Markham, always knew they wanted to travel around their native Australia in a van. However, it wasn’t until they realized they were expecting a child that they decided to consider life on the open road seriously.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the couple bid on an 84-square-foot secondhand 2015 Mercedes sprinter van. “It came up just by chance, and we took a chance on it, placing a bid without seeing the van in person,” Milton, a women’s health dietician, yoga teacher, and co-owner of Women’s Wisdom Co, says. “Thankfully, it all turned out amazing, and the van was exactly as we hoped it would be.”

At first, the couple wanted to take on the updating and building on their own, but having their child, Reef, and husky, Aura, made the thought of those ambitions a little tricky. So they enlisted the help of Anton of Fleurieu Fit Outs to maximize their small space.

Milton and Markham even picked up a couple of DIY projects along the way (their proudest being creating a transitional seating area with three functions — a table setting, an L-shaped couch, and a full-sized single bed for their son).

Even though the small van is home to three people and a pup, the family has mastered the art of van life and picked up hacks along the way — like using velcro to ensure the jarred items on their shelves are secure. The van has allowed them to visit several places, like Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, and Queensland — and there are still so many places to see without having to “sacrifice the everyday luxuries that a home has to offer,” Milton says.
