Why we have a crush on this property:
Even from the outside, this 1920s construction is not your classic brick house. Double front doors and two sets of huge windows flanking the entryway elevate the curb appeal and hint at a pre-residential history. In fact, the home was originally built as a lyceum for the Pawtucket Spiritual Progressives, and over the years evolved into a shoe store and antiques gallery. Today, it’s a spacious and undeniably cool residence that still manages to hold onto its multi-use aesthetic through original features and modern updates.
One element I adore about this home is how conducive it is to both hunkering down and entertaining a crowd. Take the living room, for instance, where floor-to-ceiling bookshelves beg for a slow day at home, curled up in an armchair with a book. But when company is over, a 13-foot projection screen rolls down over the bookshelves, creating an impressive home theater.
The rest of the first floor features whitewashed walls, heated floors, and cathedral ceilings that make the 3,692-square-foot space feel even larger than it already is. The kitchen is one of my favorite zones, decked out with double ovens, a two-tier island with barstool seating, and marble and zinc counters.
Up the steel and concrete staircase, the industrial-cool upper level showcases a pyramid skylight that beams sunlight straight into the stairwell (a feature I’m positive would feel like nature’s happy light). A brick-clad bathroom and primary bedroom with access to a private wooden terrace are among the other second floor highlights. There’s a lower level, too, with tons of additional shelving and room to tackle whatever project you’ve been waiting to have space for. Should you ever feel like leaving home, the address is a quick stroll to Downtown Pawtucket Historic District, a 15-minute drive from Providence, and less than an hour to Boston.
The house is listed for $899,900 by Joshua Deaner of Mott & Chace Sotheby’s International Realty.
